Spain: extraordinary regularisation is closed — Moroccan applicants now enter the decisive stage

he filing period ended on 30 June 2026. For Moroccan applicants who submitted a file on time, the task is no longer to apply, but to monitor the case closely, respond swiftly to any request for documents and prepare for the next steps if a positive decision is issued.

Moroccan nationals were among the leading groups of applicants. They accounted for 14% of filed applications, according to figures relayed in late June by the Foundation for Global Citizenship.

The scheme was designed for people who were already living in Spain. It was not a new route for people currently in Morocco who wish to move to Spain.

Who the scheme was for

Applicants had to demonstrate that they were in Spain before 1 January 2026, had remained there continuously for at least five months at the time of application, and had no criminal record.

People in an irregular administrative situation also had to show at least one additional condition: past or planned work, a qualifying family unit, or a recognised situation of vulnerability.

What applicants should do now

Applicants should regularly check the email address, phone number and postal address used in their file. If an application was submitted through a lawyer, administrator or authorised association, notifications may be sent to that representative first.

The maximum decision period is three months from the formal admission of the application. If no decision is notified after that period, Spanish rules treat the administrative silence as a refusal. In that situation, specialist advice is essential. Keep copies of the full file, submission receipt and all correspondence.

Filing a request is not the same as being allowed to work

This point is crucial. The receipt proving that an application was filed is not itself a work permit.

According to Spanish authorities, the official communication opening the administrative process gives the applicant the right to live and work anywhere in Spain and in any sector. It also leads to a Social Security number and recognition of access to healthcare. Applicants should not present a simple filing receipt to an employer as a final work authorisation.

A positive decision still requires another step

Following a final positive decision, the applicant must apply for the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE) within one month through the National Police documentation service.

The initial authorisation is valid for one year. It allows the holder to live and work in Spain, but it does not grant the right to settle or work in another EU country.

Beware of scams

No intermediary can guarantee a positive outcome, speed up a decision outside the rules or sell a residence permit.

Applicants should only seek assistance from accredited immigration lawyers, authorised administrative professionals or recognised associations. Several registered organisations can provide free support.
