Morocco–Melilla: Gradual Reopening of the Border After More Than 36 Hours of Closure

The closure caused major disruption to Operation Marhaba, leaving more than 2,000 travellers, most of them Moroccans living abroad, stranded while waiting to continue their journey. Hundreds of vehicles also remained blocked around the crossing.

The reopening is taking place under reinforced security, with small groups of vehicles being allowed through progressively. The aim is to reduce congestion while maintaining safety in the area. Authorities may close the crossing again if new collective crossing attempts are reported.

MM News advises Moroccans abroad who are currently travelling to avoid the area until traffic returns to normal, follow official instructions and check the latest updates before heading toward Melilla.

Travellers still in Spain are also encouraged to consider alternative ports or entry points, depending on the options available through transport companies.

MM News recommends that all Moroccans abroad remain cautious, allow extra travel time and rely on official sources rather than unverified information circulating on social media.
