An October 28 Royal Cabinet statement announced the forthcoming start of operations at Nador West Med's first terminal and the development of Tanger Med 3. King Mohammed VI also called for tangible benefits for surrounding communities and training aligned with emerging activities.
For the diaspora, the announcement opens a discussion about participation. It does not establish a dedicated overseas Moroccan recruitment or funding scheme. The opportunity for analysis lies in the connection between infrastructure, skills and viable economic activity.
Start with a problem that needs solving
A logistics professional working in Europe may see ways to apply experience gained abroad. An engineer or entrepreneur may consider a technical service or a partnership. Before investing, each needs to answer the same questions: who requires the service, who would pay for it and what standards must it meet?
These are possible avenues to investigate. They should not be read as confirmed vacancies or available contracts. A credible proposal requires named counterparts, verified access conditions and enough working capital to cope with the time needed to establish a business.
For Moroccans with family roots in the Oriental or the north, attachment to the region may provide the motivation. A site visit and a realistic cost assessment can turn that motivation into a clearer decision. Infrastructure development alone cannot establish whether a particular small business will succeed.
Participation can take several forms
Diaspora involvement need not begin with a permanent return. A training assignment, a technical partnership or introductions to potential customers may be options to discuss with local organizations. Each arrangement should define the expected work, responsibilities and timetable.
Local value also needs to be explicit. Does the partnership transfer a skill, strengthen a supplier or help an existing company find buyers? Those questions offer a useful way to assess a proposal before celebrating its wider impact.
The next milestones worth following are operational: confirmed commissioning, published supplier needs, accessible training and transparent routes for companies wishing to participate. For Moroccans abroad, reliable information on those points will help separate an interesting economic development from a project they can realistically pursue.
