Moroccan Travel Industry Experiences Substantial Expansion in Early 2026
Publicité
In the initial three months of 2026, Morocco played host to 4.3 million visitors, marking a 7% year-over-year increase, with tourists exhibiting a propensity to spend more per trip due to the maturation of the nation's tourism offerings. According to Fatim-Zahra Ammor, the Minister of Tourism, the growth in revenue underscores the significant economic implications for local ecosystems, with the government striving to build upon this momentum by diversifying and developing the tourism sector. The first-quarter figures surpass the nation's strategic benchmarks, considering that Morocco welcomed nearly 20 million tourists in 2025 and exceeded the 2026 target of 17.5 million visitors. Foreign currency travel revenues reached MAD 138 billion in 2025, surpassing the 2026 target by MAD 18 billion. Direct employment in the tourism sector reached 894,000 jobs in 2025, up from 802,000 in 2022, exceeding the roadmap's target of 80,000 additional positions by 2026. The government's 2023-2026 tourism roadmap, supported by a $600 million investment, aimed to attract 17.5 million tourists, create 200,000 new jobs, and generate MAD 120 billion in foreign currency revenue by 2026. Presently, Morocco targets 20 million international visitors in 2026 and projects that arrivals could surpass 26 million by 2030, with annual revenues reaching approximately MAD 200 billion. The strong first-quarter performance coincides with the growing international recognition of Morocco's tourism sector, as evidenced by the official opening of the first-ever UN Tourism thematic office in Africa, situated in Rabat. Shaikha Nasser Al Nowais, the Secretary-General of UN Tourism, described Morocco as a leading African model in innovative tourism development. A late 2024 UN Tourism report indicated that Morocco's tourism sector contributed 7.3% to the nation's GDP by 2023, with the sector's contribution to Morocco's GDP climbing from 3.7% in 2020 to 7.3% in 2023 and 12.3% in 2024. The government's strategy focuses on diversifying attractions, upgrading hotels, doubling air capacity, and enhancing marketing efforts, with considerable investment directed toward expanding airport capacity and developing transport networks. Furthermore, Morocco is preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal, an event expected to further accelerate tourism infrastructure development and international visitor flows.
