Moroccan craft carries cultural meaning, but entering a new market requires a commercial plan. Organised by Morocco’s embassy and Maison de l’Artisan, Morocco Week in Jakarta includes planned business meetings with KADIN and ASEPHI. Members of the Moroccan community attended the opening. The event continues until November 6.
For artisans and diaspora entrepreneurs, the important test will come after the exhibition: whether introductions lead to sustained demand.
Reaching the right business networks
KADIN represents Indonesia’s business community and participates in economic-policy dialogue. ASEPHI brings together craft producers, traders and exporters and organises the INACRAFT exhibition. These organisations provide relevant professional networks for exploring a market.
Access to a network, however, is only a starting point. A prospective buyer will need more than an attractive product: reliable specifications, delivery schedules, suitable packaging and a workable landed price all matter.
For a Moroccan workshop, the challenge is to preserve the character of its work while meeting the practical requirements of a commercial relationship. A small initial order may offer a useful way to test that balance before committing to larger volumes.
A possible role for the diaspora
Moroccans living in Indonesia could help connect workshops with local partners and explain commercial expectations. This is an opportunity to investigate, rather than an established role attributed to the community members attending the event.
Useful partnerships would need clear responsibilities. Market introductions, translation, distribution and promotion are different services; treating them as such would help avoid misunderstandings.
The official account reviewed describes planned business engagement, not a completed record of contracts. Success should therefore be assessed through qualified contacts, sample requests, delivered orders and repeat business.
Jakarta offers an opportunity to begin those conversations. Their lasting value will depend on what follows: relationships that reward skilled work and give Moroccan artisans a sustainable reason to return to the market.
